Move over Pugs Dachshunds are out in force across Glasgow
More than 50 Dachshunds are regularly meeting in park venues across Glasgow and greater Glasgow.
Dachshunds Around Glasgow was formed last year after dog owners found that there was a growing number of people interested in forming a Dachshund only walking group.
Founding member Jennie Walker says: “There used to be a few of us who’d meet up and walk at a park around Glasgow and then go to a doggy café like St Luke’s.
“After doing this for a while, we started having 30 or 40 people turn up and we knew it wasn’t just a sociable thing and we needed to make it more official.”
Figures suggest that there has been a 40% rise in the number of people owning Dachshunds since 2015.
Jennie fell in love with the breed after looking after her neighbours Dachshund Coco and now owns two of her own named Pinto and Lima.
She said there is multiple reasons why they are so popular: “They’ve snowballed in popularity recently partly because of social media and the fact you can get any item with a Dachshund on it.
“There’s also very small dogs but have large personalities, they suit a big range of people who want to walk for miles or maybe not walk quite as far.
“But, trust me they do love their walks and need exercise!”
Earlier this week the organisers of the Pug pop up café which came to Glasgow last month said a similar Dachshund café would appear in the city on the 15th of July.
The event will turn a coffee shop venue into a haven fit for dogs and dog lovers alike for one day only.
Jennie said the group were excited about the event although it may be “chaotic with all those dachshunds in one place!”
