Top ten Glasgow runs for a summertime of fun, family and fitness
WITH our 2018 beach bodies being put to the test with the temperatures rising over the next few weeks, running events across Glasgow are a great way to stay in shape.
From a gentle 3k around the Green to a marathon along the picturesque Clyde, there’s plenty local events to get you out of the house and on your feet.
The Glasgow Standard has pulled together the top ten runs for you, your family and even your pet dog.
Whether running for chairty, fitness or fun, this guide has details on prices, locations and distances so you can have a fun running-filled summer this year.
1 – Babcock Shettleston 10k – 27/05/18 – Organised by the Shettleston Harriers, this 10k will take runners over a traffic free course around Glasgow Green and along the River Clyde.
For £20.50 or £18.50 for Scottish Athletics affiliates, this race will pass the People’s Palace and the Royal Doulton fountain.
The course is flat and ideal for those aiming to achieve a PB.
Parking and public toilets are available around the Green after starting near the Glasgow Green Football Centre.
2 – Subway helping hearts family 5k – 03/06/18 – The whole family can run at this event which is free for children under 12 and only £8 per person when you register online.
Those participating in the 5k race will recieve a t-shirt, a subway lunch and a medal upon completion.
All of the sponsorship money raised goes to the Heart Research UK and Subway Healthy Heart Grant scheme which aims to provide up to £10,000 to local projects promoting a heart healthy lifestyle.
3 – Christian Aid Fun Run 5k or 1k – 03/06/18 – This run promises to be a fun one, encouraging participants to dress up or wear something red.
With all the money raised going to help with Christian Aid’s work in Syria, those doing the 5k will bound around three laps of Overtoun park.
Those doing the 1k may cycle or scoot around the route contained within the park.
Both lots will start of at 2.30pm but people taking part are permitted to walk, run or jog the course.
Taking place in Rutherglen, runners of all ages will have a delightful Sunday at this event.
4 – Simply health great women 10k – 10/06/18 – This is one for the ladies!
Get all of the girls together to run the 10k course in and around the city of Glasgow, possibly after a girls Saturday night.
For just £27, participants will recieve a medal, t-shirt, finisher’s goodie bag, water, a time chip and a fantastic atmosphere.
The Simply Health Great Women’s Run 2018 takes on a scenic route through the west end passing iconic buildings such as Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow University and the SSE Hydro to name a few.
5 – Barrhead Rainbow Run 5k – 16/06/18 – Following a sell out debut year in 2017, this run will return bigger and better with even more paint.
Tickets to run are £12 for adults and £9 for children which includes a t-shirt and paint packet to throw on the day.
Taking place on a 5k route in Barrhead town centre, there will be more ‘colour zones’ than before with different coloured powder paints.
The starting line in Carlibar Park will feature a brand new foam party.
A run suitable for every mess-loving family member.
6 – Glasgow Mens 10k – 17/06/18 – With its entries closing soon, this event, which has been running since 2004, promises to be THE run for men in the west.
Open to males over 15 years of age, this race encourages men to raise money to help improve their life expectancies.
Almost three out of four suicides are by men and the aim of this run is to change that.
Costing £21 entry, this is a great way for men to celebrate Father’s Day in style, fundraising for causes which matter to all.
7 – 3k on the Green – 29/06/18 – Starting off at the McLellans Arch at Glasgow Green, this 3k is a flat road race which takes place at 12.30pm.
The cost of the run is £2 per person with all proceeds raised going directly to charity.
Following the Clyde upstream for around 1.5km before turning back, this is a lovely route.
Runners of all abilities, from experienced club runners to the recreational jogger, are welcome to take part and get fit with June’s 3k on the Green.
8 – Clyde Stride Ultra Marathon – 14/07/18 – If an easy 3 or simple 5k isn’t enough for you then take part in the Clyde Stride Ultra Marathon.
This provides runners with the chance to gallop along some of Scotland’s most accessible new pathways.
Starting off at Partick Railway Station through Strathclyde Regional Park, the UNESCO World Heritage Site at New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve to finish adjacent to the Visitor Centre.
For just £26 per runner, this makes a great mid-summer run.
Runners note: this is a self-navigating event.
9 – Big Fun Run Glasgow 5k – 28/07/18 – This series of untimed runs across the UK is good to get fit and getting into running.
As they say: “Run for fitness, run for charity, run for fun… just run.”
Starting at Bellahouston Park at 11am, this race for all ages promises to be a gentle one with no pressure and lots of laughs.
Under 5s go free, children aged 5-15 are £11.50 and adults are £13.50 to take part.
With all ages permitted and a nice route planned this is a race for everyone.
10 – Dog Jog Glasgow 5k – 28/07/18 – Here’s one for the whole family and the dog!
Starting off in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow at 2pm, this is a relaxed run for you and your dog to get out and about getting fit.
Entry is £13.50 for all who wish to enter with their four legged friend.
Upon crossing the finish line you recieve a doggy bag filled with goodies including a Dog Jog Collar Keyring.
This race is all about getting involved, making new k9-loving friends and enjoying the great outdoors with your pooch.
