Annie Lennox to be installed as Glasgow Caledonian University’s chancellor in July
Pop sensation Annie Lennox will be installed as chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) at a ceremony on Monday, July 2.
The instalment will take place GCU’s Glasgow campus, which will see a procession from the Britannia Building to the Saltire Centre, where the ceremony will take place.
Ms Lennox, originally from Aberdeen, is best known for being a member of the band Eurythmics and has won a total of eight BRIT Awards.
She performed at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and is also known for her charity work and has raised money and awareness for HIV/Aids.
In 2010, she was given an OBE in the New Year’s honour’s lists for her work fighting Aids and poverty in Africa.
In November 2017, she was appointed GCU’s first female chancellor, replacing the outgoing Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
On becoming GCU’s chancellor, she said: “It is a truly remarkable honour to be invited to become chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University. I am humbled by it, and intend to serve this outstanding institution in the very best way I can.
“Following in the footsteps of such an exemplary individual as Muhammad Yunus is somewhat daunting, but I’m very much looking forward to working with everyone in a collaborative way, so I can be of good value to the students and the establishment of university.”
Professor Pamela Gillies, GCU’s principal and vice-chancellor, said: “The students, staff, and lay governors of the university feel privileged indeed that she has accepted the role of chancellor and are excited by the prospect of what we might now achieve together over the coming years.”
As chancellor, Ms Lennox will carry out formal and ceremonial duties, which includes conferring degrees on students, as well as supporting and promoting the university.
GCU, established in 1993, has over 16,000 students and also has campuses in London and New York, as well as global networks in Africa and the Middle East.
