Glasgow bar pledges support for mental health services from mac and cheese sales
‘Mind over Macca’ – that’s the message being put forward ahead of next month’s World Cup from a city centre bar, as it looks to support struggling mental health services in the city.
The Admiral Bar on Waterloo Street will donate 50p to the Scottish Association of Mental Health for every one of its popular macaroni cheese dishes sold during the 32 day tournament in Russia.
Co-owner Marc Ferrier said: “I just wanted to do something for mental health charities and used the phrase “mind over macca”. We sell loads of macaroni and just changed it. We thought it was quite catchy and people would get on board with it
“Macaroni’s our biggest selling dish, so that was the reason we chose it because we know we’d be able to make a reasonable donation at the end of it.”
Discussing issues surrounding mental health, he said: “I think a lot of the things in the press and social media focuses on guys not wanting to talk about their mental health.
“The World Cup’s traditionally a time where lots and lots of groups of males congregate and go out and watch games. It’s from the 14th of June till the 15th of July, it’s a month of fundraising.”
Mind over Macca has gained widespread support from a number of other bars and restaurants, including Bloc, Platform at the Arches, Piece, Red Onion, Julie’s Kopitiam, The Dirty Duchess and Finsbay in Milngavie.
Marc added: “It’s kind of overwhelming, but also shows there’s clearly the appetite for people to address the issue of mental health.”
Mind over Macca will begin on Thursday, June 14 when the FIFA World Cup kicks off.
