A £60m investment chance for third-party investors in hotel chain Travelodge will be used to create around 300 jobs

The company is expanding to cover ten more cruise ports.

Glasgow currently has five Travelodge sites in the city with more in the surrounding area, a number likely to increase considerably due to the easy commute to the Port of Greenock.

Having opened its first hotel in Dover on May 21, the company has said it hopes to offer low-cost accommodation at the most popular cruise ports across the UK to keep up with the cruise boom.

Travelodge Property Director, Tony O’Brien, said: “Today is a double celebration for Travelodge.

“Not only have we opened our first hotel in Dover but this opening also cements our presence at the UK’s top ten busiest cruise ship ports.

“With more Britons taking to the waves, our port based hotels are also benefiting from holidaymakers stopping over before embarking on, and returning from, their voyage.”

In 2017, Scotland was visited by 761 cruise vessels which brought in more than 680,000 passengers.

This year saw 815 ships travelling with close to 821,000 passengers expected to climb aboard through the summer.

In 2016, it was also reported that the cruise industry was worth £2.58billion per year to the British economy.

Mr O’Brien also said: “The cruise boom is still underway and predicted to grow from strength to strength; therefore, we are getting on board now and looking for ten new hotel sites at UK’s growing ports.

He added: “This expansion represents an investment of £60million for third party investors and will create around 300 new jobs.”

The new venue in Dover overlooks the castle and is located minutes from the port cruise terminal.

The locations being scoured for new hotel sites also include: Edinburgh, Harwich, Hull, Liverpool, Newcastle, Poole, Portsmouth, Southampton and Tilbury.
