The Waverley’s first voyage of the season -just in time for the bank holiday
BY Eliza Ritchie
The Waverley is scheduled to set sail for its first voyage this year on Saturday.
The last seafaring paddle steamer will be returning to the Clyde for the summer months, after entertaining people around the UK.
Completed in 1947 the Waverley has had an illustrious, if not accident prone, career. Last years’ Clyde schedule was cut short after the boat struck the Rothesay promenade in August.
In 1973 the boat finished her career with CalMac and was sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society for £1.
The Waverley, following a refit between 2000 and 2003, is now modernised to cope with the demands of modern passengers. Three bars, a restaurant and a disco provide entertainment throughout the day.
With a number of different routes, the trip begins at the Glasgow Science Centre before making its way down the Clyde.
