Black Panther wins top award
The top prize at the 25th Screen Actors Guild awards has been won by superhero film Black Panther.
The cast of the film were awarded the prestigious prize for the outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture at a ceremony in Los Angeles.
The film, starring Chadwick Boseman, was hailed by critics as the “best-looking Marvel movie yet”.
Speaking on receipt of the award, Mr Boseman emphasised how the many black actors in the cast had battled against the odds to achieve acclaim.
He said: “We all know what it’s like to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured, yet you are young, gifted and black.
“We know what it’s like to be told there’s not a screen or a stage for you to be featured on. We know what it’s like to be the tail and not the head. We know what it’s like to be beneath and not above.
“And that is what we went to work with every day. Because we knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world.
“We could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing. We could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see.”
The film, made by Disney’s Marvel Studios, has been championed for its diverse cast and production crew.
It took home the fifth biggest opening weekend in box office history.
Rami Malek was awarded for an outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody
The award for a female actor in a leading role went to Glenn Close in The Wife.
