A study by Glasgow Caledonian University has revealed that leaving rubbish bags out for refuse workers could damage their health.

The joint study with the University of Greenwich found that lifting rubbish can lead to musculoskeletal disorders over the long term.

The researchers looked at the work carried found that the risk is increased when lifting is involved, as opposed to collecting waste by wheeling in a bin.

They have called for the pick-up of boxes to be discontinued “as a matter of urgency”.
