Holocaust exhibition comes to Paisley Abbey
An exhibition of testimonies from survivors of Nazi-dominated Europe comes to Renfrewshire this week.
The showcase, displayed at Paisley Abbey, is entitled Gathering the Voices and documents more than 40 stories from men and women who fled to Scotland to find sanctuary during the Second World War.
One testimony from Alice Malcom, 94, describes her life as a child leading up to the conflict.
It reads: “The way things were, not pleasant to say the least, I wrote a letter to my mother and I said, ‘If I don’t get out of here quickly I will never get out.’
“My brother didn’t live with us because it was obvious that men were taken away very quickly and people actually said that the Austrians went mad like the Germans never did.”
The organisers behind the project explained: “The exhibition contains a wealth of fascinating images and visual material that helps to brings to life the experiences of the people who came to Scotland to escape the Holocaust.”
The Gathering the Voices visual display is mobile and is available to hire for schools and other organisations.
The start date of the exhibition falls on 29 January 2019, just after National Holocaust Remembrance Day, and it will run until 3 February 2019.
