Scottish fighter bags another UFC win

Scottish UFC star Joanne Calderwood put on an impressive performance, as she bagged a win against ‘Queen of Violence’, Airane Lipski, in New York.

The judges reached an unanimous decision, scoring the bout in Calderwood’s favour, which takes her record to 13 wins in 16 fights, and 3-0 at Flyweight.

Speaking at the post fight conference the fighter said: “I’m a little bit disappointed I didn’t get the stoppage.

“I wanted to try to see if I could have pulled out a submission, it wasn’t quite there.

“My team did a great job studying her (Lipski), we expected what she gave us tonight.”

Despite going into the fight underdog, Calderwood took all three rounds, with a show of precision striking and a dominant ground game.

Lipski set out to impress in her UFC debut, but her initial flurry of punches were met with Calderwood’s effective mat work and submission attempts, overwhelming her opponent as her UFC experience showing through.

The rounds saw Calderwood land a high number of punches and kicks, and clinch work, showing fans why she earned the nickname ‘Dr Kneevil’.

When asked when fans could see her in the octagon again, Calderwood claimed she felt fit enough to fight again that night, going on to call out fellow Flyweight, Jessica Eye, who also has three wins in the division.

However, Eye quickly responded on social media, suggesting Calderwood should work on her cardio first.

Jojo hit back, stating she just sees excuses: “We can be vocal on who or what we want next, but at the end of the day, UFC will come back and tell us who we’re fighting next.”

The UFC star, who remains unbeaten in the Flyweight division, feels 125lbs is where her strength is at: “I’m much happier at this weight, This is my division and I feel comfortable there.”

Although she acknowledged the card was already busy, Jojo still hopes she might get a chance to fight on UK soil, not ruling out an appearance at UFC London in March.

“I think it’s pretty full just now, but I would be ready for March, definitely.”
