USA

More than two dozen people are reported dead as a result of the extreme cold and snow in the northern United States.

The deaths occurred across eight states, with the weather also causing hundreds of injuries.

Illinois saw over 220 cases of frostbite and hypothermia in the week since the polar vortex struck last Tuesday.

The vortex resulted in a drop in temperature which was as low as minus 45 Celsius in the worst-hit areas.

Other injuries included broken bones, heart attacks, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

In many areas, residents were advised not to leave their homes as frostbite could occur in 10 minutes or less.

Haiti

A recovery attempt has found the bodies of 28 Haitian migrants who lost their lives off the coast of the Bahamas.

The recovery was the result of a migrant boat that sank six miles off Marsh Harbour in the north of the country.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force rescued 17 survivors in the operation which lasted over the weekend.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Caribbean and migrant attempts are common.

The US embassy in Haiti tweeted a warning saying that “illegal migrant & smuggling operations are dangerous and frequently end in tragedy.”

Eygpt

Fifty mummies, dating back to the Ptolemaic era, have been discovered by Egyptian archaeologists.

The mummies, of which twelve were children, would have lived at around 305-30BC.

They were found in four burial chambers 9m (30ft) below the ground in the Tuna El-Gebel site in Minya, south of Cairo, Egypt’s capital.

Different materials were used for burial, with some shrouded in linen and others being laid to rest in stone coffins or wooden sarcophagi.

While their identities are unknown they are likely to have held important ranks according to officials.
