Scottish firefighters push for diversity in the ranks with new recruitment drive
Scottish firefighters have launched a recruitment drive after it was revealed that less than 1% of their staff are from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) have revealed that the push will strive for more diversity in the ranks, encouraging people from a wide range of backgrounds to apply.
Liz Barnes, SFRS director of people and organisational development, told the BBC: “We are committed to ensuring that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reflects our country’s very unique and diverse communities.
We are actively reaching out to everyone to ask them to consider a fantastic career as a fulltime firefighter.”
She added: “If you are capable of being a firefighter, then we will help you realise that ambition.”
Just 5% of Scotland’s 3,000 firefighters are women.
The recruitment endeavour will offer 4 ‘women-only open days’ in Glasgow, Perth, Inverness and Falkirk next month in hopes of balancing these stats.
