Liverpool stuns Barcelona in dramatic 4-0 Champions League defeat

Liverpool are through to their second Champions League final in a row after an explosive game against Barcelona.

The Spanish side were the favourites to qualify going into the match with a 3-0 lead on aggregate.

But a sensational comeback at Anfield on Tuesday night saw Liverpool claw their way back to end the second leg 4-0.

Despite injuries causing them to lose both Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino from the team line-up, a recovery was spurred on by a goal from Divock Origi in the seventh minute.

And it was two quick-fire goals from Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum that gave Liverpool the opportunity to turn the game around.

The 27-year-old had only been brought on as a substitute for an injured Andy Robertson at half time.

A powerful effort shortly into the second half secured their second goal – and just two minutes later he was back to claim a third.

Barcelona were visibly thrown by the sudden change in events, with even Messi struggling to stop the club from landing out of Europe at the last minute.

And this showed when Origi netted a final winning goal just short of the 80-minute mark.

This was the striker’s first time appearing on the scoresheet for a Champions League game, but the two goals could be some of the most important of his career – as he and Wijnaldum are being heralded as heroes for achieving what some have been calling a “miracle”.

The final whistle brought much elation and shocked celebration to a triumphant Anfield, both on and off the pitch.

They now face the winners of Wednesday’s clash between Spurs and Ajax in the final in Madrid at the start of next month.
