East End primary school to judge Best Bar None award
Sunnyside Primary school has been recognised for their environmental activism as an award has been named after them.
The school will judge the Best Bar None Awards on sustainability in nightclubs and bars in Glasgow.
The East End Primary School has been kicking it to climate change with a plastic straw ban, which lead to Glasgow City Council banning plastic balloons, lanterns and straws at events.
BBN are incorporating the ongoing work of Sunnyside Primary School’s environmental campaigns, introducing the Sunnyside Sustainability award to the list of local award categories.
The Best Bar None award is an annual initiative which recognise best practice among the licensed trade.
Principal teacher Lisa Perrie believes the children have ‘already had an impact’ in changing the world.
She said: “They’ve been making waves with their campaigns, ensuring they are respectful when speaking to big businesses or councillors.
“They’re passionate about the environment and want to ensure people change their attitudes towards climate change, while rocking a few boats with their honesty and directness.”
The P7 pupils have dubbed themselves ‘Ocean Defenders’ and have started a campaign to tackle plastic in the ocean.
P7 pupil Emily said being an Ocean Defender is ‘her highest achievement’.
She said: “Everything I do with Ocean Defenders is my greatest achievement, because I feel like by spreading the message I’m making a difference.
“I want to make sure for my children that they can see orangutans.”
The #DrainCampaign aims to raise awareness of the plastic which falls into drains and sewers, like crisp packets and bottles. The students say this can affect wildlife, dolphins and marine life.
They want to create colourful drain overlays so more people are aware the effect of rubbish falling in. They hope it could lead to more people clearing up the litter and help make streets, and waterways clear.
The Best Bar None awards will happen later this year. But the Ocean Defenders are already making waves of changes, both in their area and in the city.
