Global Strike for Climate, which took place on Friday November 29 between 11am and 2pm, was organised by environmental activist groups Extinction Rebellion and Scottish Youth Climate Strike.
Event coordinator and Glasgow Youth Climate Strike member Emil Carr said: “The turnout today has been great and it’s really encouraging to see so many people of all different walks of life come together and show their support.
“The climate crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing our generation and for too long we’ve been frustrated by the lack of action from those in power.
“Scientists have been warning us about this catastrophe for decades and it’s the youth who are going to be left now picking up the pieces because older generations sat back and let it happen.”
Activists marched around George Square demanding that world leaders stop accepting money from the fossil fuel industry and take meaningful legislative action.
Extinction Rebellion volunteer Sally Clark said: “We literally have ten years to save our planet before it’s too late, and our so-called leaders are too busy stuffing their pockets with money from polluters to care.
“The fossil fuel industry is extremely powerful and there’s a lot of money involved in lobbying and persuading politicians to delay climate actions.
“I know the oil and gas companies are investing millions in stopping meaningful climate action and legislation from taking place.”
Representatives from the Scottish Green Party and Scottish Socialist Party, as well as non-environmental activist groups, were also on George Square showing their support.
Rebecca Cornwell of the Glasgow University Marxist Society said: “Capitalism is killing the planet and we can’t afford to spend any more time living under a system that prioritises those at the top.
“We need a revolution to dismantle this deadly and oppressive structure before these corporations kill us and our planet.”
