Easter holidays a no-go warns Sturgeon

The Scottish Government has advised people against booking overseas holidays for the Easter break.

Nicola Sturgeon said it was “highly unlikely” that any holiday accommodations would reopen by April.

Scots have also been warned not to get their hopes up with staycations, as there is still doubt over establishments here being allowed to operate.

The First Minister told MSPs on Tuesday:

“We are likely to advise against booking Easter holidays, either overseas or within Scotland, as it is highly unlikely that we will have been able to fully open hotels or self-catering accommodation by then.”

The First Minister added:

“However, for the summer, while it is still highly unlikely that overseas holidays will be possible or advisable, staycations might be – but this will depend on the data nearer the time.”

The possibility of any summer holidays depends on infection rates dropping severely within the next few months.

The total of people tested in Scotland sits at 1,638,293.

The total confirmed as positive has risen by 1,121 to 194,269.

64 more patients who tested positive have died, bringing the total to 6,828.

Currently, any arrivals to Scotland from outside the Common Travel Area must book and pay for a managed 10-day isolation in quarantine hotels.

A combined total of 1,300 rooms close to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports are implementing the rules at a cost of £1,750 per person.

Travel may be looking bleak for the next few months, but airline groups are already beginning to advertise package holidays for next year.

EasyJet is already advertising holidays for the 2022 winter season, with trips to Egypt and Spain topping the charts.

Travel journalist Simon Calder warned that people itching to book holidays abroad should “expect less choice and higher prices“.

Staycations may be the way to go this year if infection rates fall.
