SWPL Cup: Celtic, Glasgow City, Hibernian, and Spartans all advance to the semi-finals.
The two Glasgow derbies of the quarter finals saw Celtic overcame Rangers 1-0 while Glasgow City thrashed Partick Thistle 5-0.
Edinburgh sides Hibernian and Spartans joined Celtic and Glasgow City, with Hibs beating Aberdeen 2-0, and Spartans defeating Dundee United 3-0.
The draw for the semi finals takes place at 3pm today with the semi-final ties set to be played at the Forthbank stadium in Stirling on the 13th/14th of November.
Celtic’s narrow victory over rivals Rangers at the Rangers training centre saw them enter the semi-finals of the SWPL Cup for the first time since 2018, with English forward Charlie Wellings 56th minute strike enough to see Celtic advance. Celtic are aiming to win the trophy for just the second time, with their previous final win coming in a 4-1 win over Spartans in 2010.
Glasgow City breezed past Partick Thistle with Scotland forward Lauren Davidson scoring a hat trick while Republic of Ireland international Aoife Colvill came off the bench and grabbed a double late on to ensure their spot in the next round. The 15-time SWPL champions and 6-time SWPL Cup winners will be looking to get their revenge after losing the last final in 2019 to Hibernian on penalties.
The most successful SWPL Cup team Hibernian will be aiming to extend their record of 7 trophy wins as they secured a 2-0 win over hosts Aberdeen. The current holders have defender Rachael Boyle to thank as her first half brace at the Balmoral Stadium saw Hibs continue their SWPL cup defence. Hibs have held the trophy since 2016 and will be wanting to become the first side to win the trophy 5 times in a row.
Just like Celtic, Spartans are looking to win their second trophy, with their last SWPL Cup win coming in 2007, when they were known as Edinburgh. Spartans secured their place in the last 4 by winning 3-0 against SWPL 2 side Dundee United, with Rosie McQuillan, Katie Frew, and Katherine Smart all scoring for the home side. Spartans were runners up 5 times between 2008 and 2013 but lost every final, and are currently the lowest positioned team in the SWPL that is competing in the semi-finals.
