Alex Salmond: Former First Minister Calls for an Immediate Independence Referendum as Sunak Nears Number 10
After Liz Truss’ resignation just 45 days into her tenure as Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the Conservative party.
With former PM Boris Johnson ruling himself out of the race yesterday, the only opposition is Portsmouth North MP Penny Morduant.
But the Politician from Torquay is running out of time to secure backing from her party, as she needs at least 100 fellow Tory MPs to support her campaign by two o’clock this afternoon.
On the other hand, Rishi Sunak currently has 177 backers- many of which have swapped from Boris Johnsons’ camp after he stepped aside.
Many from north of the border are incensed as the party they did not vote for are appointing their third leader that they also didn’t vote for in a matter of months.
Christopher McEleny, Alba Party member and councillor, said: “The United Kingdom is broken.
“It is shocking that a party member, no matter their political orientation, has the ability to be elected leader despite losing out merely weeks earlier”.
Former First Minister and Alba Party leader, Alex Salmond, added: “It seems that there is now to be installed a Prime Minister without a shred of democratic credibility.
“Rishi Sunak doesn’t have a scintilla of a popular mandate and was even rejected by the Tory party membership only six weeks ago.
“Sunak’s elevation smacks more of coup d’etat than election process.
“When the Scottish Parliament returns today an Independence Referendum Bill should be tabled, and the new undemocratic Prime Minister should be presented with a democratic demand from Scotland.
“Political action is required to protect our people, to pursue Scotland’s right of self-determination and extract our country from this London farrago”.
