NHS Scotland start winter vaccine rollout for over 50s

Over 50s with no underlying health conditions in Scotland are being urged to book their winter vaccines.
More than two million people are being offered vaccines, with 93.9% of people getting a flu and Covid-19 vaccine in the same appointment, according to the Scottish Government.
Over the winter periods, the NHS faces extra pressure due to an increase in seasonal viruses like norovirus and the flu, and colder weather.
Pat Wynne, Nurse Director for Primary and Community Care for NHS Lothian said: “This year’s winter vaccination programme is well under way. We strongly encourage anyone who is eligible for one or both vaccinations to come forward.”
The public are being urged to get vaccinated as soon as possible as there is expected to be a rise in Covid-19 cases this winter.
Mr Wynne added: “Getting vaccinated offers the best protection to you and those around you this winter. Over time, Covid-19 vaccine immunity reduces, and the flu virus changes, so it’s important to top up your protection when offered. It’s quick and safe to have both vaccinations at the same time so, if you’re eligible for the flu vaccination and the Covid-19 winter booster, you only need one appointment.”
Scotland has already seen a large increase in Covid-19 cases in the past few weeks. One in 35 people had Covid at the week beginning 10 October, up from one in 50.
Nearly 900,000 people have come forward for their vaccines since the winter vaccination booster campaign started at the end of August.
Dr Nick Phin, Director of Public Health Science and Medical Director urges everyone to get their vaccine when offered: “If you are invited for vaccination this winter, please take the opportunity to increase your protection against flu or Covid-19 by getting your vaccines.”
If you are over 50 you can book your appointment for the winter vaccines on the NHS Inform website.
