Race for the Next Prime Minister Intensifies
The Political unrest within the UK government is increasing as the Conservative party narrow down their candidates for Prime Minister.
The nominations closing time fast approaches meaning the race is truly on for the next leader of the Conservative party and the Prime Minister of the UK.
The format has changed from when Liz Truss became Prime Minister as to enter the race you need to have the backing of 100 MPs.
Each candidate needs to submit their nominations by 2pm today. If it is revealed that both Sunak and Mordaunt have gathered over 100 nominations, 150,00 Tory party members will be asked to vote for the next leader.
Sunak has accumulated 165 public supporters from within the Conservative party. Rival Mordaunt is reported to have 25 public supporters with the suspect more have not been voicing their opinions publicly. If there is no other candidate with 100 nominations submitted by the deadline Rishi Sunak will become the Prime Minister.
On Twitter Mordaunt said: “I’m running to be the leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister – to unite our country, deliver our pledges and win the next election.”
However, if Mordaunt doesn’t garner more votes and Sunak becomes Prime Minister the ethical issue of him being unelected by the UK public becomes larger.
Angela Rayner said on Sky News: “The Tories are about to hand the keys of the country to Rishi Sunak without him saying a single word about how he would govern.
“No one voted for this. It is not surprising he’s avoiding scrutiny; he was so bad that just a few weeks ago, he was trounced by Liz Truss.”
The deadline looms and the fate of the Conservative party and the UK hangs in the balance with the question of a general election only getting bigger.
