Over 50s Encouraged to Get Vaccinated This Flu Season

The annual flu jag is being rolled out to people aged 50 to 64 in Scotland. As the country sees a spike in covid cases, it is now more important than ever to keep on top of your vaccinations.

By October 16, 875 people were in hospital with Covid-19. This was a 3.9% increase from the previous week.

As we approach the winter months and people get back to socialising indoors, NHS Scotland is urging people to get their flu vaccine as soon as they are eligible.

Chloe Duffy, a final year nursing student at Glasgow Caledonian University, commented: “Health officials believe that flu activity may rise again this winter, and as many people have not been vaccinated against it for the past two years the infection could become more serious.

“It is strongly recommended that members of the public get vaccinated this year so they can protect themselves against the flu, and also protect the more vulnerable members of the community.

“You can get both the Covid-19 and the flu at the same time. This is known as a ‘co-infection’ and individuals are more likely to suffer greatly if they aren’t vaccinated against both.”

She also added: “In the last two years vaccination levels of those aged 65 and over have increased more than previous years. This is a fantastic achievement given the challenges of Covid-19, and it would be great to see this being kept up this year and in the years to come.”

The vaccine will be rolled out to more age groups in the coming months.
