Budget cuts leave landmark library facing reduced opening hours

The Mitchell Library is an essential public place in Glasgow but due to council budget cuts they face reduced opening hours.

The library is considered an important landmark in the city and provides computer and Wi-Fi access to those who need it.

Glasgow City Council confirmed in their budget meeting last week that in order to cut costs the library would reduce its hours by six per week.

Many of the public rely on the longer opening hours for study purposes, internet access and a warm place to work.

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic a campaign ran called ‘Save Glasgow Libraries’ after many failed to reopen post-lockdown. The campaign successfully saved libraries across the city but the reduction of The Mitchell Library’s hours has left many concerned.

The council has made many cuts across the leisure sector including; reduced swimming pool hours and closing health suites in Glasgow Club venues. The leisure sector is essential for many Glaswegians who rely heavily on services such as libraries and wellbeing facilities.

The reduction of opening hours will effect regular library users as the leisure sector feels the strain from this round of council budget cuts.
