Lewis Capaldi’s new documentary praised by mental health charities
Lewis Capaldi’s new documentary sparks hope from mental health charities that an end to the stigma surrounding men’s mental wellbeing is near.
Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now dropped on Netflix on April 5 and is all about the singer’s mental health struggles following his debut album: Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent.
Capaldi opened up about his grapple with imposter syndrome, panic attacks, tourette’s and hypochondria after his new-found celebrity status.
His condition got to such a stage that he stated: “if it gets to a point where I’m doing irreparable damage to myself I’ll quit. I hate hyperbole. But it is a very real possibility that I will have to pack in music.”
The singer already had to cancel his last tour due to a severe case of bronchitis.
Spokesman for mental health charity Men Matter Scotland, Martin Melly, spoke about how the film could break the stigma surrounding men’s mental health.
“If they see guys like him and any other guys speaking about how they struggle then hopefully that will give the average person not a kick but that wee inspiration.
“Guys will start to say ‘you know what if they can talk about it, maybe I can talk about it and try and get help’ because we all need help at some point.”
Stories like Lewis Capaldi’s could help save lives and encourage difficult conversations surrounding mental wellbeing between men.
Over 40% of men have never spoken to anyone about their mental health struggles, according to statistics, due to embarrassment or the negative stigma surrounding the topic.
