ASDA Govan bans teenagers to clampdown on abuse
Young people in the Southside of Glasgow will no longer be allowed to enter a local supermarket as a curfew has been put in place.
ASDA Govan has announced that they will no longer allow teenagers under the age of 16 to enter the supermarket after 6pm without an adult.
The announcement comes as a result of numerous accounts of verbal and physical abuse against staff. They hope it will aid in the clamp down on teen anti-social behaviour.
A security guard from a fellow Glasgow store has said: “This is a decision that [ASDA] Govan did not take lightly. Speaking from experience the abuse that we face as staff is unacceptable and is not part of the job.
While it seems a drastic move, it speaks volumes that the store feels it has come to this point. However it is not a lasting solution, and is not something that can continue across the country, or in the long run.”
The change has been met with backlash from a young persons charity who claim the move is a breach of rights.
Includem Glasgow, who are a children’s support charity, has claimed that this only prevents children from participating in cultural activities and connecting with society.
The charity believes that it will brand all teenagers as anti-social and is unfair.
ASDA is not the only retail chain to face problems from young people. Both McDonald’s SIlverburn and The Centre Livingston took similar moves to ban anti-social behaviour.
The ban will be reviewed at the end of the summer holidays, with a decision to be made then.
Police Scotland have urged locals to report any cases of anti-social behaviour that they see.
