Rangers director of football Ross Wilson leaves for Nottingham Forest

Ross Wilson has left his post as Sporting Director of Rangers following three and a half years in the role.

Many Rangers fans have reacted positively to the news, as they brand his time at the club a failure.

This is despite the club winning their first league title in 10 years in the 2020/21 season, winning the Scottish Cup and reaching the Europa League final the season after.

Wilson’s most successful signings include Calvin Bassey, who was brought in on a free transfer in 2020 and became a regular starter for the club soon after, before a £19.6m transfer to Ajax two years later.

Other successes still at the club include, Antonio Colak, John Lundstram and Fashion Sakala.

Alex Smith, former St Mirren and Scotland under-21 manager told the Scottish Sun in an exclusive: “I can’t really understand why Ross has come in for such fierce criticism. I think he has done a good job at Rangers, I really do.”

However, fans will argue that he is responsible for some very underwhelming signings.

The one that immediately comes to mind is Aaron Ramsey, the midfielder arrived on loan from Italian giants Juventus.

The loan fee was reported at £665,000 but he will have cost the club a whole lot more in wages, spent most of his time there injured, and missed the decisive penalty in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Amad Diallo, Mateusz Zukowski and Juninho Bacuna are amongst other flops Wilson was responsible for.

Despite mixed opinions, the Director of Football said: “I wish everyone associated with Rangers nothing but the best for the future.”

Wilson is moving on to occupy the same role at Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League and if their recent transfer history is anything to go by, he will be responsible for many signings.
