Glasgow community groups receive funding for King’s coronation celebrations

With the coronation of King Charles fast approaching, community groups across Glasgow have received funding to host celebratory events.

The coronation will come at a cost of an estimated £100m, with the taxpayer footing the bill as it is a state event.

£3m has been made available in funding and the national lottery funding pot has distributed thousands to various community groups throughout the city.

Barmulloch Community Development Company Ltd (BCDC) are amongst those who have benefited from the funding with £10,000 being allocated to the centre for a coronation celebration on Saturday 6 May.

The money will go towards a day of afternoon tea and live entertainment as well as an autism friendly space hosted by community group Autisfun.

Plans for BCDC coronation party

The news of the planned coronation celebrations in some of the most deprived areas of Glasgow comes at a time in which the government are beginning to roll out cost of living support payments.

There has been much debate around the validity of such extravagant spending on the coronation at a time when so many people are struggling. However, organisations such as the BCDC feel these events are beneficial to the community.

Martin McElroy, chief executive of the BCDC said: “Ever since there has been a monarchy there has been people who have been in favour or not in favour of it. For us the emphasis is about celebrating as a community.”

The BCDC host a community event every year called C in the Park and McElroy added: “This year we wanted it to coincide with the coronation and whilst that is an element, the most important thing for us is families coming together, enjoying themselves, and making memories that will last a life time.”

Amongst others receiving funding is Kindness Homeless Street Team Glasgow who will get a sizeable £9400.

The organisation run pop up soup kitchens three times a week in George square and look to provide support to some of the most vulnerable people in our city.

The charity plans to use the money to host a fun day on the day of the coronation in the Ashgill recreation centre in Milton. The event will hope to raise money and awareness for a cause so many are passionate about.
