Ex-Scotland Rugby captain Greig Laidlaw announces plan to retire

Former Scotland Rugby captain Greig Laidlaw has announced his intent to retire.

The 37-year-old, who scored over 700 points for Scotland between 2011 and 2019, will step away from playing when the Japanese season ends.

He will end his career as a player at Urayasu D-Rocks, having previously played for Edinburgh, Gloucester, and Clermont Auvergne.

The British and Irish Lions, a combined Rugby Union team of players eligible for Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland, even selected him for a ten-game tour of New Zealand in 2017.

Laidlaw retired from international duty in 2019, shortly before he moved to his current Japanese side, and still sits second in the all-time Scotland points list only behind Chris Paterson.

Nephew of ex-Scotland scrum half Roy Laidlaw, he aims to continue following in his uncle’s footsteps by moving into coaching after hanging up his boots.

The retiring player announced his plans in an Instagram post on Wednesday and offered special thanks to his wife and children, see the full post below:

Current Scotland regular Zander Fagerson, fellow recent retiree Stuart Hogg, and Scottish singer Amy MacDonald were among the hundreds replying with their best wishes, heralding him a “legend” with a “great career”.
