Sudan Conflict: British Evacuations Underway
A seventy-two-hour ceasefire in the conflict in Sudan has triggered the British Government into beginning evacuations of nationals.
Despite the start of this operation UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverley warns that the situation in Sudan remains “dangerous, volatile and unpredictable”.
Three ceasefires had already been agreed by the conflicted military groups but all three of these fell through.
This includes a truce on Friday that was supposed to last three days to mark the Muslim celebration of Eid but the bombing, shelling and gunfire continued.
More than 1,000 EU citizens have been evacuated, but until earlier today, the UK had only rescued its embassy workers.
This came under criticism but the government insisted they were doing everything they could to help people stuck but prior to the ceasefire admitted options were limited
Romisa Albashir, a resident of Aberdeen with relatives living in Sudan spoke to the Glasgow Standard about their experiences.
At present, three British flights have arrived from Sudan to Larcana airport in Cyprus including a flight of between 230 and 240 people which arrived earlier today.
As well as this, the first flight carrying UK nationals landed at London Stansted airport just after midday today carrying a similar amount.
A spokesperson for Rishi Sunak said the UK had evacuated 301 people from the country.
Eight more flights are expected to get people out of Sudan throughout the day in the attempt to get all British nationals home before the end of the ceasefire.
