Govanhill locals call for an end to flytipping

Alleyways in Govanhill have been filled with rubbish

Residents of Govanhill have raised concerns over an increase in flytipping.

Locals discussed the issue in a meeting with Glasgow City Council, where they were given the opportunity to have their say and ask questions about any problems within the community.

The build-up of rubbish left in alleyways and backstreets has angered both business owners and residents alike, attracting rats, flies and causing bad smells.

Hannah Mcgilvary, who lives in Govanhill, said: “It’s pretty horrendous, you can see lots of rats and live animals. It’s quite dangerous if kids are there, they could easily be harmed or get infections.

“As a community we should be doing a lot more to stop this and really take a look at the issue, because it’s getting bigger and bigger. The flytipping is getting out of control.”

She added that the council could do more to monitor cameras in the worst affected areas, and potentially fine those who are caught dumping rubbish on the street.

We approached Glasgow City Council for a comment, but have not received a response.
