GCU’s Wear Red campaign and a “commitment to actually embracing different cultures”

Glasgow Caledonian University’s long-running partnership with Show Racism the Red Card continued today, as students and staff banded together to celebrate Wear Red Day.

Committed to celebrating “the common good”, GCU and Show Racism the Red Card are in their fifth year of working together, with other services and campaigns running on campus constantly throughout the year.

Today’s Wear Red campaign – running during Black History Month – does what it says on the tin: people wore red coloured clothing to show their support in the fight against racism.

During a photo shoot with branding related to the campaign, the Glasgow Standard spoke to the university’s Race Equality Charter Project Officer – Tabitha Nyariki – about the various on-campus efforts:

A former Student Association Vice President, Tabitha has been involved in projects like this for around five years in various roles.

She spoke glowingly about the work with Show Racism the Red Card, as well as the anti-racism training and culture of inclusivity within the university.

She also looked ahead to the upcoming Festival of Cultures that is planned for GCU in November, saying it will be “a good opportunity” for students to “show their culture and educate other people”.

As the student’s association said upon the first year of the Show Racism the Red Card partnership: “Glasgow Caledonian University is a campus that prides itself in its equality and diversity.”

In that, the university has definitely been successful, and they will look to build on that now and in the future.
