Edinburgh has become the first Scottish city to introduce a ban on pavement parking.

This follows the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 which gave local authorities the power to introduce bans from December 2023.

Glasgow City Council plan to follow Edinburgh’s restrictions with a phased approach, expected to begin in March.

Drivers could face a fine of up to £100 if caught parking on pavements, dropped kerbs or double parking from Monday, 29 January.

Speaking at a council meeting in December, Councillor Angus Millar said: “Glasgow intends to begin limited enforcement of dropped kerbs and double parking upon completion of the necessary update to our back-office system which is currently targeted for March 2024.

“Wider enforcement will be introduced afterwards but problem areas can be introduced on an ad hoc basis as soon as systems allow.

Speaking to Glasgow Live in December, Minister for Transport, Fiona Hyslop, said: We’re highlighting the danger that illegal pavement parking poses to pavement users, and in particular those with mobility issues or visual impairments, or parents pushing prams and buggies.”

The council plans to use the money collected from fines issued make pavements safer for pedestrians.

Fines can be reduced to £15 if paid within 15 days of being issued.
