O2 revival: student accommodation may replace abandoned building

After five years, the abandoned O2 ABC concert venue on Sauchiehall Street is getting renovated.

The building was at risk of being demolished after its closure. However, after an investigation with residents and developers, the building is facing a more promising future.

There are different proposed plans, one of which is new student accommodation with a retail and leisure unit also included.

The building was severely damaged by a fire in 2018, however Glasgow City Council eventually permitted the building’s redevelopment in order to create a greener and more diverse environment in the city.

Some students are quite apprehensive about the plan, expressing their dislike for more student accommodation in the city.

One said that student accommodations are usually “eyes sores” and that the area would not benefit from this development.

Others are happy about the development, and believe “it’s about time” that the building is revamped.

The council has published drawings relating to future plans on their website.
