Former chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng has announced that he will leave parliament at the next election.

The Tory MP best known for his infamous mini-budget under Liz Truss’ premiership, announced via X (formerly twitter) that he will not be contesting his Spelthorne seat at the next general election.

Kwarteng said: “Yesterday I informed my Association Chair of my decision not to stand at the next General Election.

“It has been an honour to serve the residents of Spelthorne since 2010, and I shall continue to do so for the remainder of my time in Parliament.”

Kwarteng was pushed to resign by Truss after spooking the markets with a spate of unfunded tax cuts, Truss herself resigned six days later.
