UK charities praise royal transparency over King Charles’ diagnosis
UK cancer charities have praised the Royal Family for their transparency around King Charles’ recent diagnosis.
Whilst the palace has not specified which type of cancer the King has been diagnosed with, they have confirmed that he will begin treatment on Monday and that the diagnosis is not linked to his recent prostate examination.
Awareness groups and treatment services hope the news will encourage more people to use cancer screening programmes, as well as going for regular check-ups with their GP.
Gillian Hailstones, director of Care Services at the Beatson in Glasgow, said: “It didn’t sound like [King Charles] had a very traditional route to his diagnosis. I think it’s incredibly important to encourage people to speak to their medical teams, speak to their GPs.
“If there’s screening programmes out there, they should take part. I think it’s going to be incredibly useful in encouraging people to go forward and seek help and support.”
Around 35,000 Scots are diagnosed with cancer per year, and research shows that early detection vastly improves survival rates.
King Charles is set to continue with his constitutional duties, including meetings with the Prime Minister, whilst Prince William is likely to take on extra public engagements whilst he undergoes treatment.
