Call to declare a national housing emergency in Scotland
New figures obtained by the Scottish Conservatives show almost 40,000 people with disabilities are on a long waiting list for social housing.
The figure of 39,875 people on lists for council or housing association properties includes 1,569 children with disabilities.
However, latest findings indicate that the true total data is higher due to 32 local authorities not holding relevant data.
Members of Disability Equality Scotland believe that there is not enough being done for people with disabilities when creating housing schemes.
Ian Buchanan, an equality and access manager of Disability Equality Scotland, said: “There is a complete lack of accessible housing for disabled people and we would urge the Scottish Government to create a genuine and achievable target.
“The underlying problem is consultation, disabled people need to be actively engaged with and have their living experience taking into consideration.”
