World Seniors Darts: Highland Fling in Essex for John Henderson
Scottish Darting star John ‘The Highlander’ Henderson has been crowned champion of the World Seniors Darts as he cruised to a five-nil victory.
‘The Highlander’ who is from Huntly, Aberdeenshire, won the final with five unanswered sets in the Circus Tavern, in Purfleet, Essex, – giving the Scot a victory on his master’s debut.
Henderson said: “I’m absolutely buzzing, I never thought I would get this feeling in darts again.
“When I won the World Cup with Peter (Wright) I thought that was it for me, I lost my tour card.
“So, getting a chance to play in this, this is right up there with it (winning the World Cup), honestly, this means a hell of a lot to me.”
The 50-year-old defeated Trina Gulliver and Kevin Painter in the opening rounds, before averaging 93 to overcome Canadian Jim Long in the semi-final of the competition.
This is Henderson’s first televised singles title, and he will take home the £30,000 prize fund.
The match ended on a ton-plus finish from ‘Hendo’ as he threw home a 114 checkout to seal his fate as champion.
The new over 50’s champion added: “I am tired now!
“To win this off my own doing is fantastic, I wouldn’t say I played my A-game, but I did the right things at the right time, and I think that is only reason why I have won this.”
