Scottish charity to combat flooding with rewilding
The charity SCOTLAND: The Big Picture reports that wetlands around the world are facing an environmental crisis.
The wetlands are disappearing fast and conservationists warn that rivers must be restored to prevent flooding.
The charity remains dedicated to rewilding and raising awareness on conservation efforts.
According to their site, rewilding “works to revitalise these dynamic natural processes, driving the recovery of Scotland’s nature.”
One way to do this is through protecting floodplains.
Executive Director of SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, Peter Cairns said: “Floodplains by their very definition build wall banks, straighten river channels, and concentrate to a single channel.”
Cairns added: “[the] creation of wetlands allows rivers to flow naturally.”
Wildlife also face extinction due to loss of habitat. Furthermore, without proper floodplains, communities are more at risk from flooding.
Cairns said that floodplains are what nature intended.
The charity insists that floodplains must be reconnected to rivers now.
