Brendan Rodgers ‘sexist comments’ are ‘disappointing’ for female journalists
Celtic FC manager, Brendan Rodgers is under fire again after ‘sexist’ remarks were made to a female BBC sports reporter yesterday.
He has been urged to apologise to reporter Jane Lewis by For Women Scotland, for his comments that were made.
His attitude towards the reporter was described by the Scottish Feminist Network as “condescending” and “depressing” as he called her a “good girl” before storming out of the room.
A female youth football reporter said this casual sexism still embedded in football has caused her to worry for her future job.
Anya Diggines, a Youth Football Scotland reporter, said: “The whole situation is really disappointing and as an aspiring female journalist I am already nervous about going into a male-dominated profession.
“It makes me wonder if I am going to be spoken down to or treated differently in my job and I do not think that anyone should have to worry about something like that.
“I think it might put a lot of woman off who want to work in the industry.”
An experienced female journalist believes that this behaviour is unfortunately not all that surprising.
Steph Brawn, a multimedia journalist for The National, said: “This language from Brendan Rogers is completely unacceptable and patronising towards a journalist who has decades of experience.
“Unfortunately, it is not unheard of. There are still plenty of men in football of that generation who lack respect towards female journalists.
“People may feel this is nowhere near the levels of abuse the likes of Joey Barton spout, but it needs calling out for that precise reason, because it is subtle. This attitude from Rodgers is offensive and disrespectful and he needs to apologise to Jane Lewis.”
Fans on X have also commented on this interaction online, sharing their shock and frustration.
