Destruction at Fir Park following Celtic v Motherwell match

Motherwell’s football Stadium Fir Park has been left with broken seats in the away end after yesterday’s match against Celtic FC, despite new police restrictions to keep fans under control.

Police Scotland introduced new measures such as camera drones and a stricter access procedure to stop supporters without tickets entering the stadium.

Despite those efforts, the damage has sparked reoccurring concerns that too many fans are packing into the small ‘Ultras’ section.

It has also raised the argument that as Celtic fans are responsible for the damage, the club should cover the costs of repair.

Joe Booth, 22, a Celtic supporter who attended the Motherwell match said:

“I think that it is unlikely that fans are deliberately breaking seats but more likely that too many supporters are gathered in the one section and when a late goal is scored and people are jumping about, unfortunately the plastic seats are likely to break.

“I also think that it would be fair for Celtic to cover the costs of the damages and potentially look at ways to avoid too many fans gathering in the same section.”

Ticket allocations for away fans have already decreased dramatically in the Scottish Premiership this season making it difficult for smaller clubs to thrive and fans to attend games.

However, an increase of vandalism in stadiums will potentially lead to even tighter away supporter restrictions.
