Calls for Glasgow City Council to scrap ‘unjust’ parking restrictions
A petition has been signed by over 3,000 people calling on Glasgow City Council to reverse their decision to extend parking charge hours.
Drivers in Glasgow will now have to pay to park their cars from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week, in all 24 of the city’s controlled parking areas.
Stephen Montgomery, director of Scottish Hospitality Group, said: “This is an attack on working class people whether it be hospitality, hotel or retail workers, as well as anyone who comes into Glasgow to spend their hard-earned wages.
“This is the wrong way to plug the budget cap. What the council is doing to Glasgow is terrible and I worry that this is going to escalate to the point there’s going to be so many more people wanting to work from home and no encouragement to come into the city.
“People make Glasgow but there’s going to be no people left in Glasgow at this point.”
As previously reported by the Glasgow Standard, Glasgow City Council said this measure is to plug a £107 million gap in their budget and encourage people to use public transport.
However, Glasgow resident Lorraine Murray believes the council’s decision has been “designed solely to extract more money from hardworking citizens”.
She said: “The LEZ corruption was bad enough but this new strategy is another blow to our wallets without any clear benefit for us or our city. There’s no apparent need for extended parking times except as an additional revenue stream for the council.
“Our city thrives on its vibrant nightlife and cultural scene but excessive parking charges could discourage visitors and residents from enjoying all that Glasgow has to offer.”
