Certified Scotch: Whisky in Scotland gets the Pilipino approval
Scotch Whisky is becoming the first UK product to receive GI status in the Philippines.
The Philippines becomes one of the 100 territories in the world that recognises Scotch Whisky as a product unique to Scotland, including the traditional methods it uses during its production.
The Philippines are one of the countries that are leading in the Scotch Whisky market, with exports from Scotland rising by 30% in 2023 compared to 2019.
The Scottish Whisky Association released a press release on Monday outlining the benefits this will bring to the market, and explains that this status will bring Scotch Whisky secure protection.
Caitlin O’Donnell, Senior Legal Counsel at the Scotch Whisky Association, said: “One of our key priorities is to give consumers the confidence that what they’re purchasing is the genuine product all over the world, and securing GI protection in the Philippines is just one of the ways we can ensure that other products are not taking advantage of the reputation of Scotland’s national spirit.”
The UK-Philippines bilateral trade relationship was at an all-time high of £3b last year.
Dr. James Thackery, Director for Trade and Investment at British Embassy Manila, said: “We are honoured that the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines has granted one of its first four Geographical Indications (GI) to Scotch Whisky – a beloved UK export.”
