SNP ignores invite from GMB to hear grievances on city’s poor cleanliness
GMB members are outraged by the SNP not attending yesterday’s worker’s union meeting.
The group discussed the waste crisis that has polluted Glasgow, and the introduction of bin hubs that could threaten jobs.
Labour were the only elected officials that attended, and GMB convener Chris Mitchell feels let down by the leading party.
He said: “All the parties were invited to have their say, but unfortunately they didn’t come. I’m disappointed with the rest of the parties.”
A number of issues were brought up during the discussion, in which the members were hoping for elected officials to give some suggestions regarding the concerns.
Mitchell said: “The city is in a bit if a waste crisis, especially after the Christmas period. We’re trying to come up with solution, and if we can, we want to campaign together with elected officials.
“Regarding the bin hubs, this is obviously going to cause a massive reduction in staff. Also, we talked about a new sickness policy for workers who have life threatening illnesses.”
This is the second week in a row the GMB conducted a meeting with political parties; last week the Greens were also present when some issues revolving recruitment were resolved.
For the GMB, this waste crisis is having a detrimental impact on the city in all sectors, and is determined to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Mitchell said: “I have been campaigning for the last 10 years. The city has a statutory obligation to provide street cleanliness and the resources for that.
“It has an effect on everything, on businesses, on tourism, when people come here and find that its not a clean city. It doesn’t shine a very good light on Glasgow.”
Mitchell says he and his team will continue to reach out again to the SNP and other parties in order for them to hear about their grievances and provide solutions.
