Glasgow short film festival to ‘defy expectations’
The Glasgow short film festival is kicking-off its four-day programme with an opening gala event tomorrow night.
The 17th edition of the annual festival, running from March 20 to 24, will showcase short films at multiple venues around the city including the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT), the CCA, and Civic House.
The opening gala taking place at the GFT features six films from the experimental Scottish filmmaker Bill Douglas accompanied by live music from Gerard Black.
Organisers have said this year’s programme of documentary and fictional shorts focusses on themes of collectively, liberation, and archives.
Nancy Holt, a curator for the festival, said: “Glasgow short [film festival] tends to defy expectations with programming.
“We programme a lot of experimental films and moving image, as well as narratives that push boundaries. The programme is always eclectic and varied.
“In terms of highlights, we’ve got a big focus on liberation and resistance throughout the programme, which is particularly obvious in our Towards Liberation events.”
The Glasgow short film festival is Scotland’s largest competitive short film event. The festival launched its first programme in 2008.
In March 2020, the short film festival was the first large-scale Scottish arts event to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The organisers developed a revised online programme.
