Trade Unions Protest Proposed Council Health Care Cuts
Three of Scotland’s biggest trade unions protested today against proposals for budget cuts in the healthcare sector.
Unite, GMB and Unison joined forces outside Commonwealth House on Albion Street to urge councillors to vote against the proposed £36m cut to Glasgow’s Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP).
Unions fear the cuts will lead to hundreds of job losses in the city, as well as increasing risks to patients’ lives.
GMB representative, Chris Mitchell, said: “It’s going to decimate communities. There are hundreds of people who depend on these services, particularly those who do palliative care. They do an absolutely fantastic job of looking after the most vulnerable people in society.
“It’s getting to a point now where it’s not just non-statuary services that are being attacked – it’s statutory services that people quite rightly depend on.”
16 Glasgow City councilors and NHS Health Board members are due to vote on the issue tomorrow during the Integrated Joint Board meeting.
