Missing Dali painting could come home even later

The Vatican has requested a loan of Salvador Dali’s painting ‘Christ of Saint John of the Cross’ from Kelvingrove Art Gallery between May and June.

The piece has been out on loan to the Dali Theater and Museum in the artist’s hometown of Figueres since November last year.

Should councillor’s approve the request, Glasgow will have to wait until July to see it.

The painting would be displayed in the Church of San Marcello al Corso as part of an event celebrating the lead up to a holy year of jubilee in 2025 with the theme of “Pilgrims of Hope”.

Glasgow Life hope the painting’s pilgrimage will draw new eyes to the city’s rich arts and culture sector.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said: “Glasgow’s museums and galleries are home to collections of international significance and vibrancy.

“Loans of objects are important as they help to highlight our global reputation as a culturally rich city.”
