New government recycling fines ‘justified’ according to Glasgow students
Have you ever mixed cardboard and plastic?
Put food waste in your general bin?
If so, you could be fined up to £60 under new legislation by the SNP and Greens.
The bill would give councils in Scotland the power to fine households for improper recycling.
Local authority binman would be given the power to report households with poor recycling habits.
Households reported will first face warning letters, then fines which if ignored could build to a criminal charge.
The Glasgow Standard spoke to students around campus to see how this could impact Glasgow’s student population.
The students said they understand the purpose of the fines but wouldn’t like to be on the receiving end of one.

The bill may also introduce the ‘latte levy’ which could increase the pricing of single-use takeaway cups as well as preventing shops from destroying unsold goods and fines for littering in vehicles.
The Scottish Government hopes that this will improve the country’s environmental performance and the income taken from these measures will fund further environmental issues in the future.
Each councils approach waste disposal is different so please check your local councils’ website for more information on what goes in your bin as well as collection dates.
