The No 1 annual, originally released in 1941, is the standout piece in a huge collection of Oor Wullie, Broons and Andy Capp memorabilia poised to fetch anywhere from £10,000 to £15,000.

Believed to be the largest collection of its kind to come to auction it will occupy 80 of 190 lots at Mctear’s Pop Culture sale on Wednesday April 10.

Mctear’s are anticipating a great deal of interest in a character “recognised across the world”.

James Bruce, Mctear’s specialist, said: “Generations of comic fans grew up enjoying the antics of Wullie and his pals every week in the pages of the Sunday Post. Along with The Broons, the Oor Wullie annual remains a must-have Christmas gift for fans of all ages, and I have no doubts that the huge interest in these iconic characters will ensure a very lively sale.”

The front cover of the rare first annual features legendary DC Thomson illustrator Dudley Watkins’ famous character sat on his bucket, clad in his trademark dungarees and tackety boots.

The impressive collection, accumulated by Frank Hulett, ranges from the 1940s to present day, detailing the evolution of the iconic comic characters. Amongst the collection is an Oor Wullie No 2 annual from 1942, estimated to sell for £1,500, and a 1947/48 Broons annual valued between £400 and £600.

Mctear’s Pop Culture, Comics, Annuals, Toys & More auction will take place on Wednesday 10 April at 10am. Additional information can be found at www.mctears.com
