Volunteers join forces for big spring clean this World Earth Day

Volunteers picking litter in Glasgow

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful is combating climate change through its litter-picking scheme this Earth Day.

The group has partnered with Lidl where the event will be taking place for a week.

Yesterday, at Pollokshaws, the event started enthusiastically with a turnout of 40 volunteers.

Today at Tollcross, volunteers arrived at 10pm eagerly making a start in the park behind Lidl and the surrounding areas.

Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign officer, Emma Glencross said: “We have been doing litter-picking around the country at this stage there has been over 20,000 people involved.”

Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Scottish Litter Survey, published at the end of 2023, found that 90% of people agree that litter is a problem across Scotland, the highest figure in three years. Data also shows 85% of people agree that they want to see more efforts to prevent litter in their area.

The charity hopes to restore biodiversity and nature, promote sustainability, and create greener spaces for Scotland.

For every piece of recyclable litter collected, Lidl will use its new reverse vending machines to recycle these, with 5p per item donated to the Scottish TV Appeal aligning with their commitment to the Glasgow Recycle Scheme.

The participating stores are also in Partick and Duke Street.
