Patrick Harvie faces vote of no confidence from Alba Party
The Green Party’s co-leader, Patrick Harvie, may step down from leadership
after facing a motion of no confidence from Alba Party’s, Ash Regan.
This follows in the aftermath of last Thursday, where the Scottish
Government announced that they were to scrap a policy which aimed to cut carbon
emissions by 75% by 2030.
Party activists have rebelled over this policy, believing that the Green
Party should continue to prioritize climate change.
Chris Ballance, Green Party councillor for Aird and Loch Ness, said: “I
remember Patrick Harvie being quoted as saying that he will resign as co-leader
of the party.
“As he said himself, it is a minor issue compared to trying to improve climate
change and to make the world a better place.
“Who is leader of the Green Party is a relatively minor issue but we will take
the decisions we do in terms of the emergency general meeting and staying with
the Bute House Agreement.
“It is up to Patrick whether he stays or goes.”
Harvie is also under scrutiny for refusing on five separate occasions to
accept the recommendations made by the Cass Review on gender identity services
for Scotland.
The Cass review highlights that care needs to improve for trans youth with
medication such as gender-blockers being readily available.
Chris Ballance, added: “Trans people have always been with us, they just haven’t
been recognised in society.
“It is time that they have equal rights to everyone else and in particular,
getting the healthcare required.
“We hope that we can fight to further your course and provide any support we
can.”
