RAC say they’ve seen 9% increase in pothole-related breakdowns
The RAC have announced they have seen a 9% increase in breakdowns caused by potholes in the past year.
They have found that drivers are now twice as likely to suffer breakdowns as a result of poor road surfaces than they were in 2006.
Glasgow City Council have pledged to spend £6m repairing the city’s roads, however this is only half of the £12m spent on road maintenance last year.
The council had pledged to complete around 175 road re-surfacing projects by March this year, however the city’s roads are still plagued with issues.
The RAC have said that a milder winter has contributed to a decrease in call-outs related to potholes compared to this time last year.
However drivers are still far more likely to suffer damages due to poor road conditions than previous years.
These types of damages can range from burst tyres to broken suspension springs and can be costly to repair.
Jamie Rooney, Director of Gorbals Tyre Centre, said: “About half of the people that come in, it’s to do with pothole damage. About a year ago it was ten to twenty percent of people, but now it’s about half.
They ask if we can help fill out the forms to put a claim in to whichever council district the pothole fell in. It makes you wonder where the money from bus lane tickets go, the council could definitely be spending more money on the roads.
